The Real MIT Blackjack Mastermind

Wade Roush writes "21, the top movie at the box office last weekend, has everyone talking about the real identities of the MIT blackjack team members fictionalized in the movie and in the 2002 book, Bringing Down the House, on which the film is based. Last week a number of stories pointed to former MIT student and Las Vegas resident John Chang as the model for the Micky Rosa character, the club mastermind played in the movie by Kevin Spacey. But Boston-area Internet entrepreneur and real estate developer Bill Kaplan is saying that if anyone is the basis for Micky Rosa, it's him. Turns out Kaplan now battles the "e-mail churn" problem as CEO of Newton, MA, startup FreshAddress, which helps companies correct the outdated e-mail addresses in their customer databases." April 2: Neilston

View over Neilston

Neilston is a village and parish in East Renfrewshire set in the west central Lowlands of Scotland. It lies in the Levern Valley at the southwestern edge of the Greater Glasgow conurbation. Neilston is a dormitory village comprising a resident population of just over 5,000 people. Neilston is mentioned in documents as early as the 12th century, and its early history is marked by its status as an important ecclesiastical parish linked with Paisley Abbey to the north. Neilston Parish Church—a Category B listed building—has lain at the centre of the community since 1163. The urbanisation and development of Neilston largely coincided with the Industrial Revolution. Industrial scale textile processing was introduced to Neilston around the middle of the 18th century with the construction of several cotton mills. Although known as a former milling village, agriculture has, and continues to play, an economic role for Neilston. The annual Neilston Agricultural Show is an important trading and cultural event for farmers from southwest Scotland each spring. Although heavy industry demised during the latter half of the 20th century, as part of Scotland's densely populated Central Belt, Neilston has continued to grow as a commuter village, supported by its position between Paisley and Glasgow, from roughly 1,000 people in 1800 to 5,168 in 2001. Audiostrobelight

Audiostrobelight

Audiostrobelight was born on August 2005; but the adventuretruly began in early2004 when Steven Flick, Kris Lynch, and Scott Denham founded Hampton Roads’ Punk, Emo, and Ska Promotions (HRPES.Net). They quickly gained prestige among the local musicians and fans and later got hired by the nationally acclaimed venue, The NorVa, booking all local shows after their first smashing success in December 2004. As HRPES.net's “last hurrah” in the show booking industry before breaking up and going to college, owners Flick, Kris, Scott, and fellow operators Gabe Dyson and Adam Cohen threw together a band for a final going way surprise to their local audience at The NorVa in August 2005. The boys went on as The HRPES Band,” and with the last minute fervor and a hodgepodge of backgrounds colliding, what resulted was a new music style unlike anything before seen. The show as ag reat success in general, as well as for the band, and so the and still remains, to keep playing the music they invented and love. Audiostrobelight at that point was: Kris on Bass and Vocals, Gabe on Guitar and Vocals, Scott on Drums, Adam on Electric Violin and Mandolin, and Flick on Keyboard and Synthesizer. The band name was decided on because of its “poppy” effect, and because the band is a combination of five differently Styled musicians who truly come together as one. Stage performance plays a large role in Audiostrobelight shows, and with stage theatrics, stunts, and all-around high-energy movement, their fans can’t helpbut go crazy at shows.

Trout Lake Monster

The Trout Lake Monster is an alleged animal, identified neither as to family or species, but claimed to inhabit Trout Lake in Ontario. There is a controversy amongst the residents of North Bay, Ontario regarding the existence of the creature. Some residents say that there have been long-time stories of large swells of water, shadows, and figures of various proportions and sizes, while others say that these claims have only come about in modern times. The story of the monster amplified after the mysterious disappearance of Margaret and Allen Campbell (along with their family dog) who went missing May 25, 1956. Apparently, after eating lunch they went out in their fiberglass boat, and were never seen again.John Robert Columbo (1999), "Mysteries of Ontario", Toronto: Hounslow Press, pg. 163

Local sightings of the "monster" have included monstrous muskie, crocodile/alligator-like creatures, and serpent-like creatures.

Test your password strength

An interesting litttle app that will give a measure of how secure your password is. One extra that others like this have not offered before is the ability to download an offline version so you don't have to enter your prospective passwords into a web site you do not control. It does not yet solve the problem that secure passwords are a pain to remember, but it can least give you an idea of the effect small tweaks to your existing password, like a random capital or susbstituting a letter for a number or symbol.
