June 9: Jurassic Park

A tyrannosaurus rex like this one is featured in the first action scene of the film.

Jurassic Park is a 1993 science fiction film directed by Steven Spielberg, based on the novel of the same name by Michael Crichton. The film centers on the fictional island of Isla Nublar, where scientists have created an amusement park of cloned dinosaurs. John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) invites a group of scientists, played by Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum and Laura Dern, to visit the park. Sabotage sets the dinosaurs on the loose, and technicians and visitors attempt to escape the island. Spielberg acquired the rights to the novel before its publication in 1990, and Crichton was hired to adapt his novel. David Koepp wrote the final draft, which left out much of the novel's exposition and violence, and also made numerous changes to the characters. Spielberg hired Stan Winston Studios to create animatronics to portray the dinosaurs, shots of which were mixed with newly developed computer-generated imagery by Industrial Light and Magic. Jurassic Park is regarded as a landmark in the usage of CGI effects and received positive reviews from critics, who praised the effects (though reaction to other elements of the picture, such as character development, was mixed). Jurassic Park spawned a franchise of films and other media, and was followed by The Lost World: Jurassic Park in 1997 and by Jurassic Park III in 2001, with Jurassic Park IV currently in development. Prosthetist Makes Extraterrestrial Life from Limbs

Christopher Conte does not make a living as an artist. He pays his rent working as a prosthetist, designing and building artificial limbs for amputees. But after his 9-to-5 gig, the New York-based craftsman pours his knowledge of biomechanics, robotics, biology, and cyberpunk into intricate sculptures that could have sprung from the darkest recesses of H. P. Lovecraft's mind. In his latest series, Conte adapts terrestrial artifacts like dentist tools and watch innards to give pieces like Black Widow 1 (above) an extraterrestrial feel. Catch his newest exhibit, Cyberdine (a play on Cyberdyne Systems, the company from the Terminator movies that birthed SkyNet and, you know, took over the world) at the Last Rites Gallery in New York through June 29.

Sensor Grid

wireless sensor network

A Sensor Grid integrates wireless sensor networks with grid infrastructures to enable real-time sensor data collection and the sharing of computational and storage resources for sensor data processing and management. It is an enabling technology for building large-scale infrastructures, integrating heterogeneous sensor, data and computational resources deployed over a wide area, to undertake complicated surveillance tasks such as environmental monitoring.

The Sensor Grid enables the collection, processing, sharing, and visualization, archival and searching of large amounts of sensor data. There are several rationales for a SensorGrid. First, the vast amount of data collected by the sensors can be processed, analyzed, and stored using the computational and data storage resources of the grid. Second, the sensors can be efficiently shared by different users and applications under flexible usage scenarios. Each user can access a subset of the sensors during a particular time period to run a specific application, and to collect the desired type of sensor data. Third, as sensor devices with embedded processors become more computationally powerful, it is more efficient to offload specialized tasks such as image and signal on the sensor devices. Finally, a sensor grid provides seamless access to a wide variety of resources in a pervasive manner. Advanced techniques in artificial intelligence, data fusion, data mining, and distributed database processing can be applied to make sense of the sensor data and generate new knowledge of the environment. The results can in turn be used to optimize the operation of the sensors, or influence the operation of actuators to change the environment. Thus, sensor grids are well suited for adaptive and pervasive computing applications.
