Jus naufragii

international_law | maritime law

The jus or ius naufragii (right of shipwreck), sometimes lex naufragii (law of shipwreck), was a medieval custom (never actually a law) which allowed the inhabitants or lord of a territory to seize all that washed ashore from the wreck of a ship along its coast. This applied, originally, to all the cargo of the ship, the wreckage itself, and even any passengers who came ashore, who were thus converted into slaves. This latter custom disappeared before the jus naufragii came to the attention of lawmakers.

Right, God, and abolition

The theoretical basis for the law, in Christian (and presumably Islamic) countries, was that God must be punishing the doomed ship for the vice of the crew. The ship and its cargo had thus been taken from their rightful owners by an act of God and were fair game. Despite this, consistent attempts to abolish the practice are recorded over the course of more than a millennium.

Why New York City's Iconic Pizza Is So Tough to Replicate

It costs $482.79 to get a decent pizza in San Francisco — $17 for the pie, $85 for cab fare, and $378.80 for the flight to New York. Throw in $1.99 for tinfoil. I wrap each slice individually to protect the toppings and maximize what I can fit inside a regulation-size carry-on: six pies' worth of triangular packets, arranged in an alternating pattern to create rectangular layers. The bag attracts some attention at airport security. Apparently, 48 interlocking aluminum-wrapped triangles are easy to mistake for an IED.

NSA Releases Historical Documents on TEMPEST

security

sgunhouse writes to mention Wired's Threat Level has a piece on a recently-declassified document detailing the history of TEMPEST. "It was 1943, and an engineer with Bell Telephone was working on one of the U.S. government's most sensitive and important pieces of wartime machinery, a Bell Telephone model 131-B2. It was a top secret encrypted teletype terminal used by the Army and Navy to transmit wartime communications that could defy German and Japanese cryptanalysis. Then he noticed something odd. Far across the lab, a freestanding oscilloscope had developed a habit of spiking every time the teletype encrypted a letter. Upon closer inspection, the spikes could actually be translated into the plain message the machine was processing. Though he likely didn't know it at the time, the engineer had just discovered that all information processing machines send their secrets into the electromagnetic ether."
