Will You Be Outsourced?

technology

It seems that in my line of work, there is always some sort of "reorganization" going on. One week we hear one rumor, the next another. Things are always in flux. Over the last eight years at my J.O.B., our department has been officially reorganized three times. We've gone from 30 staff members to 17, and our workload of active computers on the network has doubled. When things get hairy during roll-outs or upgrades and we start whining, the boss always brings up the fact that our jobs could be outsourced.

Beersaw

A drinking game first created by the residents of the Homestead at Denison University (Granville, OH) in 2007. This game involves two teams of two players standing on parallel balancing boards (or 'see-saws') with a large plastic paint bucket placed at the center of each board. The game is played by teammates trying to balance on their board to avoid touching the ground, while at the same time drinking a can, cup, or bottle of beer. Once a team member has emptied their beer container, they can attempt to score a point by shooting the empty container into the paint bucket on the otherteam's side. The game has no time limit, and ends only under one of two conditions: (1) A team wins by successfully shoots 3 empty beer containers into the other team's paint bucket, or (2) A team loses by touching either end of their balance board to the ground 7 times.

Judge Refuses To Sign RIAA 'Ex Parte' Order

NewYorkCountryLawyer writes "The RIAA just can't get enough of going after University of Maine students, but it appears that the judges in Portland, Maine, may be getting wise to the industry's lawyers' antics. RIAA counsel submitted yet another ex parte discovery order to the Court ('ex parte' meaning 'without notice'), in BMG v. Does 1-11, but this time the judge refused to sign, pointing out that there is no emergency since there is no evidence that records are about to be destroyed [PDF]. This is the same judge who has previously suggested the imposition of Rule 11 sanctions against the RIAA lawyers, accusing them of gamesmanship."

Super-soft x-ray source

astronomical objects | x-rays

A super soft X-ray source is an astronomical source of very low energy x-rays. Soft x-rays have energies in the 0.09 to 2.5 keV range, whereas hard x-rays are in the 1-20 keV range Supersoft X-Ray Sources. Super soft x-rays however are believed to be produced by steady nuclear fusion on a white dwarf's surface of material pulled from a binary companion Super Soft X-ray Sources - Discovered with ROSAT (Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics). This requires a flow of material sufficiently high to sustain the fusion. Contrast this with the nova, where less flow causes the material to only fuse sporadically. Super soft x-ray sources can evolve into type Ia supernova, where a sudden fusion of material destroys the white dwarf, and neutron stars, through collapse Proceedings of the Workshop on Supersoft X-ray Sources held at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics.
