Wide Country Stake
The Wide Country Stakes is a American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in March at Laurel Park Racecourse in Laurel, Maryland. The Anne Arundel Stakes, is open to fillies age three-years-old and up willing to race seven furlongs on the dirt. It was the 18th running of the stakes race in 2010.
An ungraded stakes race, it offers a purse of $70,000. The race was named in honor of the 1991 Maryland-bred "Horse of the Year, Wide Country. Tom Tanner's home bred, Wide Country proved to be an indomitable force during her three year-old season, running her win streak to nine straight races (all stakes races at either Pimlico Race Course or Laurel Park Racecourse. The streak began in the final months of 1990 as the chestnut filly overcame adversity to win the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes over a muddy race track after losing a shoe. She also won the Grade 3 Pimlico Oaks by a romping eight and a half lengths. Wide Country shipped to Belmont Park and Meadowlands during that campaighn and placed second in graded stakes company in both cases. Trained by Bob Camac, Wide Country had fulfilled the promise shown at age two when she captured three straight Maryland Stakes Races on her way to state-bred championship honors. Wide County retired with a record of 20 wins or placings in 26 starts, for career earnings of $819,728.

History
Eugenio Montenegro (1815–) was Mexican soldier, who came to California with José Figueroa. The Washington Hotel, Monterey, erected in 1832, was for a few years the private residence of Eugenio Montenegro. In 1840, Montenegro married Juana Maria Gertrudis Soberanes (1824–). Eugenio Montenegro, who had been promoted from customs guard to senior captain of his division, was granted the eight square league Rancho Caslamayomi in 1844. In 1848 Montenegro, who had returned to Mexico, sold the rancho to British merchant, William Forbes of Forbes & Barron of Tepic, Mexico. Khan Variations
Khan Variations is a musical composition for 5 octave marimba written by Alejandro Viñao in 2001. The piece is structured as an uninterrupted set of 8 rhythmic variations lasting 10 minutes and is considered one of the most challenging works in the marimba repertoire, both from the technical and musical point of view. Nancy Zeltsman ‘recommended marimba solo literature’ lists Khan Variations in the ‘extremely difficult’ category. The piece has featured in the repertoire of many international marimba competitions such as the International Marimba competition in Salzburg, the Taiwan Marimba Competition, the Percussive Arts Society marimba competition and the Linz International Marimba Competition which in 2006 was won by the young international soloist Ji Hye Jung playing Khan Variations in the final round.
