The town of El Wak is situated near the border of Somalia and Kenya. The district of El Wak is bordered by Bardera and Garbahaarreey districts on the east, and North Eastern District of Kenya on the west.
In Af Soomaali language, the word Ceel means well. Many cities and towns in Somalia have that word in front of it indicating the importance of water wells for mostly pastoral populations of Somalia. The name El Wak is derived from a water-well which was used by area herders and it's still utilized to this date.
One of the last local conflicts in Gedo region took place in June 2005. Tribal disbutes between Talhe of Marehan and Garre occured. There was some death during the conflict which lasted for a few weeks until Jubba Valley Alliance mediated waring functions.
