Dr. Kathy Brown
Biography
Kathy Brown was born in Jamaica mid-island town of Mandeville into a family of academics; both parents are doctorates and educator at the University of the West Indies (UWI) in Kingston, Jamaica. She began playing the family piano at age 5 before being signed for formal lesions in classical piano.
An unquenchable drive to master the instrument led Brown to pursue music as elective through high school, Ivy League college in the USA and during medical studies at the UWI. She has studied classical piano up to grade 6 (Royal School of Music, England) and later, after med school, took intermittent classes in jazz piano after medical school..
Kathy Brown leads an assemblage of rotary musicians consisting of bassists, drummers, and percussionist under the bill of Dr. Kathy Brown & Friends, a much sought-after jazz band in Jamaica. On a local jazz show with her band the pianist drew the attention of two Toronto-based muscians that lead to her August 2007 overseas debut performance at the Island Soul Festival in Toronto, Canada. Since, Brown has performed in Suriname, Antigua and in Graz, Austria at the World Choir Games.
The pianists is a staple on the jazz circuit in Jamaica and has played the Port Royal Music Festival, Ocho Rios Jazz Festival, and Air Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival.
The multi-natured performer at times plays in duets of piano-vocals with leading local singers or musicians, otherwise and outside of her band, doing solo piano performances at corporate functions, weddings and private events. She appears as a classical music soloist and as an arranger, composer, and musician for the highly the acclaimed University Singers. And, Dr. Kathy Brown has worked with a number of top-flight Jamaican reggae backing bands. In 2007, Brown released her debut CD album, Mission: A Musical JourneyItalic text, a 9-track album recorded in part at the famous Bob Marley’s Tuff Gong studio, was nominated for Best Instrumental Album at the inaugrual Jamaica Music Award .
