Gravitational gradient

The gravitational gradient is the effect which causes tidal locking. It refers to the difference in the acceleration of gravity acting on an orbiting body such as a moon or asteroid. The points on an orbiting body that are closer to or further from the earth cause torques about the center of mass, because of the slightly different gravitational pull being exerted upon them.
