The Rt Rev Michael Richard John Manktelow was the Bishop of Basingstoke from 1977 until 1993”Debrett's People of Today 1992” (London, Debrett's) ISBN 1870520092). He was born on 23 September 1927 and educated at Whitgift School and Christ's College, Cambridge ”Who's Who1992 “(London, A & C Black ISBN 0713635142) before embarking on an ecclesiastical career with a curacy at Boston, Lincolnshire after which he was Vicar of Knaresborough “Crockford's clerical directory, 1995” (Lambeth,Church House ISBN 0715180886). Following this he was Vicar of St Wilfred’s,Harrogate Church web-site and then (his final appointment before elevation to the Episcopate) Rural Dean of the area. In retirement he continues to serve the Church as an Assistant Bishop within the Diocese of Chichester.
