1991 Orange Bowl


The 1991 Orange Bowl was a 1990-1991 college football bowl game was played on January 1, 1991, for the national championship. The 57th edition to the Orange Bowl featured the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and the Colorado Buffaloes. Colorado came into the game with a 10-1-1 record and 1 AP ranking, whereas Notre Dame came into the game with a 9-2 and 5 AP ranking. The game was a rematch of the 1990 matchup, in which 3 Notre Dame took a National Championship away from 1 Colorado, 21-6. This game would be forever remembered for Rocket Ismail's 91 yard punt return for a touchdown in which it was called back by a clipping penalty. Six plays later, Notre Dame quarterback Rick Mirer threw his third interception of the night to Colorado cornerback Deon Figures, who ran out the clock for the victory. It gave the Buffaloes its first National Championship.
