Earth-Like Planets May Be Common in Our Galaxy
astronomy | milky way galaxy | nasa | science | spitzer space telescopeAccording to astronomers working with NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope, terrestrial planets may have formed around many of the sun-like stars in the Milky Way Galaxy. University of Arizona, Tucson, astronomer Michael Meyer and his colleagues used NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope to determine whether planetary systems like ours are common or rare in our Milky Way galaxy. SOFA (Astronomy)
astronomy | celestial coordinate system | celestial mechanics | numerical softwareThe SOFA (Standards of Fundamental Astronomy) software libraries are a collection of subroutines that implement official IAU algorithms for astronomical computations.
At present (2007) they are available only in Fortran source code format, but the documentation reports plans to make a C version available, too.
Gravitational gradient
astronomyThe gravitational gradient is the effect which causes tidal locking. It refers to the difference in the acceleration of gravity acting on an orbiting body such as a moon or asteroid. The points on an orbiting body that are closer to or further from the earth cause torques about the center of mass, because of the slightly different gravitational pull being exerted upon them.
