Born in Cologne, Germany, he played for Bayer Leverkusen in his native Germany. In June 1997 he transfered to newly promoted English Premier League side Barnsley for £250,000. Leese played just two seasons in England starting 16 league games, coming on as substitute in one more and playing in four League Cup matches.
