Google in China
searchI'm sure most readers remember the furore that erupted when Google agreed to the censorship demands of the Chinese government when it launched its chinese portal. Their reasoning for doing so was that it was the only way they could get into China and compete in the growing Internet space there. From the market share data that is coming out of China this move has not really allowed them to take over that market, and observational evidence seems to show why.
Search this: Danny Sullivan on the loose!
blogging | searchHey, we can all play a game in our Google searches now: Just query “where in the world is Danny Sullivan?” He just quit working for Search Engine Strategies and Search Engine Watch. Danny is a genuinely good guy. I can’t wait to see what he does next. I’ll certainly be searching for it.
I thought Google was a search company…
blogging | google | searchHmmm, I thought Google hired all the world’s smartest search-engine experts. Don’t they have a few PhD’s hanging out at Google? So, please explain these results as of 11:15 p.m. PST: IceRocket, two links to the InformationWeek article about Google’s new business service offerings. Sphere, 57 links Ask.com, 33 links Technorati, 9 links (and their numbering is off) Google’s Blogsearch: [...]
Community + Search = Evaal?
blogging | searchWhat makes eBay special? To me it’s not the technology, although that’s pretty damn impressive, especially now. But what sets eBay apart is the community of buyer’s and sellers. I was wondering when we’d see a search engine that’d add both a community of recommenders with an indexer like the one Google has and I just saw [...]

How to use My Yahoo! and My Web
blog | blogger | blogging | bookmark | bookmarks | my web | my yahoo | myweb | myyahoo | search | social bookmarks | social networking | socialbookmarks | socialnetworking | toolbar | yahooJoan asked a question on my last post which I thought may be representative of a question many people may have. Her question was, "what is the difference between " My Yahoo " and " My Web "? My Yahoo gives me most everything I need, why are there both?" Here's my attempt at an answer: Most everywhere on the Internet where there is information being updated regularly (blogs, news and sports, product information, your Netflix queue, etc.) you will find an RSS feed. This feed (which is identified by a web address) can be added as content to your My Yahoo! page. Look for the " " button for the easy two-step process. The end result is your My Yahoo pages begin to provide you with a one-stop location for all the information which is meaningful to you. Much like a customized newspaper or catalog. But there remain times when you need to look beyond the collection of information you've compiled on your My Yahoo pages. That's where My Web comes in. Sure, you can live without it. Effective searching is pretty simple to do and with a little trial and error you can drill down to the site(s) which offer you the best information. But what if others who had preceded you in searching for the same thing had left some markers to what they thought were the best sites? That, in a nutshell, is My Web. Not only do you benefit from the collective efforts of others in this way but maybe more importantly your own stumbled upon web site gems saved using My Web will bubble to the top of your search results. My Web also gives priority to the saved pages from your assigned contacts (friends, co-workers, family, etc.) since everyone in these groups will probably have shared interests. This discussion wouldn't be complete without comparing My Web with bookmarks (or even Y! Bookmarks ). Bookmarks are best used for sites you repeatedly find yourself returning to or need to find ASAP (Email, favorite game site, local newspaper crossword page, etc.). My Web is a bookmark depository (it should contain your bookmarks and then some) which can be searched at a later date. My Web also offers the ability to save most web site pages just in case they are deleted by their owner in the future. I hope this helps clarify. If not, let me know where the confusion lies.
