Free Broadband, Part 4,892

Another company is proposing to offer free broadband everywhere. M2Z is gathering venture capital funding and preparing to bid on next year's auction of the advanced wireless services-3 spectrum. I wish them luck.

IOGEAR's Wireless USB to VGA kit

All I Hear is Static

tech

To help myself get through college financially, I worked as a Hardware Support technician for the University’s Computer Services. One day, on my phone rotation, I received a phone call from a man who was rather annoyed that he couldn’t access his e-mail from home. Our school had a dial-up system (it was the mid-90’s) [...]

The Mouse is Dead? Not So Fast, Slick...

tech

It's probably an overstatement to call this guy a tool, but Mike Elgan over at Datamation seems to think that the mouse is obsolete and will disappear from computers in 2-4 years. Aside from this being a gross overstatement, his reasons for thinking this go beyond any kind of rational thought. Here's why he thinks that the mouse is dead:

Inventor Slims Down Exoskeletal Body Armor

tech

The Hamilton Spectator is reporting that inventor Troy Hurtubise, creator of the "bear-protection suit" made famous by taking a hit from a moving vehicle, has slimmed down his design in hopes of landing a lucrative government contract. From the article: "He has spent two years and $15,000 in the lab out back of his house in North Bay, designing and building a practical, lightweight and affordable shell to stave off bullets, explosives, knives and clubs. He calls it the Trojan and describes it as the 'first ballistic, full exoskeleton body suit of armour.'"

Researchers Make Mount Etna Sing

tech

The Interfacer writes "Predicting eruptions will become easier now scientists are using technology to translate the patterns in a volcano's behaviour into sound waves. "The research project, which brings together experts from Europe and Latin America, digitally collects geophysical information on seismic movements before using data sonification to transform them into audible sound waves, which can then be 'scored' as melodies. The resulting 'music' is then analysed for patterns of behaviour and used to identify similarities in eruption dynamics and so predict future activity."

The Pentagon's Supersonic, Shape-Shifting Assassin

tech

grammar fascist writes "CNN reports that Northrop Grumman is under contract to build a new supersonic, shape-shifting bomber by 2020. The main innovation is in its single, rotating wing. From the article: '[It] will cruise with its 200-foot-long wing perpendicular to its engines like a normal airplane. But just before the craft breaks the sound barrier, its single wing will swivel around 60 degrees (hence the name) so that one end points forward and the other back. This oblique configuration redistributes the shock waves that pile up in front of a plane at Mach speeds and cause drag. When the Switchblade returns to subsonic speeds, the wing will rotate back to perpendicular.'"

Airbus Plans to Expand Cockpit Automation

tech

Carl Bialik from WSJ writes "Airbus plans computerized systems that could automatically maneuver jetliners to avoid midair collisions, without pilot input, the Wall Street Journal reports. From the article: 'For the first time, flight crews of Airbus planes will be instructed and trained to rely on autopilots in most cases to escape an impending crash with another airborne aircraft. Currently, all commercial pilots are required to instantly disconnect the autopilot when they get an alert of such an emergency, and manually put their plane into a climb or descent to avoid the other aircraft. The change, which hasn't been announced yet, comes after lengthy internal Airbus debates and despite skepticism from pilot groups and even some aircraft-equipment suppliers.'"

Yahoo! Tech launches

tech | technology | yahoo

Yahoo! launched the hinted at Technology page today - Yahoo! Tech It site is there to help people through the mass and complexity of technology that's out there. The interface is nice and clean, filled with some ajax'y goodness. There are 3 main areas:

  • Products   Research and compare products
  • Advisors    Get help on figuring out how to do stuff
  • My Tech    Personalized information about your searches \ goodies
There are hooks throughout the site to other Y! services - Y! Shopping (for product Searches), Y! Answers (for related Q&A), My Yahoo! (there are RSS feeds of the Product Advisors) You can share your My Tech section, but that looks to be email only - I'd prefer this to hook into my social network so I can drop it onto Y! 360 Read     Permalink     Email this     Linking Blogs     Comments
