New Yahoo! Toolbar for Firefox released (v1.2.1.20060626)
firefox | toolbar | yahooI noticed last night a new update for the Y! Toolbar for Firefox extension has been released, taking us up to v1.2.1.20060626 I don't notice anything that's significantly changes, maybe our readers can help me out there (or the devs themselves). As usual, either grab it from the Y! Toolbar site, or just have Firefox check for updates. Permalink Email this Linking Blogs Comments

How to use My Yahoo! and My Web
blog | blogger | blogging | bookmark | bookmarks | my web | my yahoo | myweb | myyahoo | search | social bookmarks | social networking | socialbookmarks | socialnetworking | toolbar | yahooJoan asked a question on my last post which I thought may be representative of a question many people may have. Her question was, "what is the difference between " My Yahoo " and " My Web "? My Yahoo gives me most everything I need, why are there both?" Here's my attempt at an answer: Most everywhere on the Internet where there is information being updated regularly (blogs, news and sports, product information, your Netflix queue, etc.) you will find an RSS feed. This feed (which is identified by a web address) can be added as content to your My Yahoo! page. Look for the " " button for the easy two-step process. The end result is your My Yahoo pages begin to provide you with a one-stop location for all the information which is meaningful to you. Much like a customized newspaper or catalog. But there remain times when you need to look beyond the collection of information you've compiled on your My Yahoo pages. That's where My Web comes in. Sure, you can live without it. Effective searching is pretty simple to do and with a little trial and error you can drill down to the site(s) which offer you the best information. But what if others who had preceded you in searching for the same thing had left some markers to what they thought were the best sites? That, in a nutshell, is My Web. Not only do you benefit from the collective efforts of others in this way but maybe more importantly your own stumbled upon web site gems saved using My Web will bubble to the top of your search results. My Web also gives priority to the saved pages from your assigned contacts (friends, co-workers, family, etc.) since everyone in these groups will probably have shared interests. This discussion wouldn't be complete without comparing My Web with bookmarks (or even Y! Bookmarks ). Bookmarks are best used for sites you repeatedly find yourself returning to or need to find ASAP (Email, favorite game site, local newspaper crossword page, etc.). My Web is a bookmark depository (it should contain your bookmarks and then some) which can be searched at a later date. My Web also offers the ability to save most web site pages just in case they are deleted by their owner in the future. I hope this helps clarify. If not, let me know where the confusion lies. Yahoo! Toolbar for Firefox updated to v1.2.0
firefox | toolbar | yahooWhile going through one of my regular Update checks, I noticed Firefox informing me of an update to the Yahoo! Toolbar . The new one is v1.2.0.20060518, but no word from Yahoo! on what's changes (Anyone care to chime in??) From the looks of it, I don't see much different - no new buttons in Add/Edit, and all my other stuff appears to be the same. You can either get the Update from the Yahoo! Toolbar site , or just open Tools - Extensions in Firefox and pull it directly from there. Permalink Email this Linking Blogs Comments
Yahoo! Toolbar users suffering from withdrawals.
toolbar | yahoo | yahoo toolbar | yahootoolbarUsers of the Yahoo! Toolbar are seeing only the default set of buttons (what you'd see if not logged in) and, in some cases, not loading buttons at all. According to posters in the Y! Toolbar support forum , this was first blamed on the recently released new version of Firefox. But it was soon pointed out to be inflicting IE users as well. Several of yesterday's posters complained of missing buttons on their Y! Toolbars. We'll keep you posted. In the mean time, you can open your Yahoo! Bookmarks in a separate tab or window to help get you through this. UPDATED (within the hour of posting): My Yahoo! Toolbar just reloaded successfully (happened on it's own with no help from me). Notably it contains a button that I was trying out a few days ago and lacks the button that it replaced. I had dropped the button I was trying and reinstated the original in its place. So it would appear that my current toolbar configuration is days old. Maybe Y! is restoring from a back up of the database? This would also explain the rolling downtime and recovery that users are reporting. Permalink Email this Linking Blogs Comments

Yahoo! Toolbars get del.icio.us
browser | del.icio.us | firefox | ie | my web 2.0 | myweb2.0 | toolbar | yahooThe Firefox and IE versions of the Yahoo! Toolbar have recently received updating . The IE toolbar still has tabbed capabilities and this extends to both IE5 and IE6 versions. This is not anywhere near the smooth tabbed interface of Firefox but certainly better than no tabs at all. Okay after typing that I tried the newest version of the IE Toolbar and I'm impressed. The tabbing behavior is quick and uneventful. No jitters. Nice! According to the YSearchblog post , in the Firefox implementation bookmarks, mail alert and Anti Spy have been worked on but I can't see any functional changes. Can you? Maybe efficiency improvements or bug fixes? The most visible change is the addition of a del.icio.us button for both Firefox and IE toolbars. I came into social bookmarks with My Web 2.0 and really like it. But I like it as a personal depository of saved and searchable sites. del.icio.us to me seems to be very similar and only recently can you keep your saved pages private. I've looked at del.icio.us and it seems to offer less than My Web 2.0 for my purposes. The new del.icio.us toolbar button has a great feature that is sadly missing from the My Web 2.0 button; if you highlight text on the page prior to clicking the "Save to del.icio.us" button, the highlighted text gets copied into the Notes field. This functionality is in several bookmarklets but it noticeably absent from the My Web toolbar button. The tabbing in IE is pretty nice. I'm going to have to switch to IE for a couple days and see what it's like to have the Yahoo! Toolbar and a tabbed interface within IE. Permalink Email this Linking Blogs Comments
